The following is a list of Canadian, American and International Universities that offer Master's Degree programs in the field of English language education.  Many of these degree programs may be completed partly or entirely online and offer options for part-time or full-time study.

Simon Fraser University
Description:

Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia offers a Master of Education in Teaching English as an Additional Language - Fieldwork Stream. This 17-month program is intensive and the course content addresses international and globalized contexts of English as an International Language (EIL) education. There is a fieldwork component which allows students to observe Canadian English as an additional language classes at different levels. There is also a Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL) M. Ed. This particular program differs from the EIL program in that it is NOT intensive. With the expectation that the participants of this particular program are already employed, classes are scheduled in the afternoon and evening. Most participants complete the program in four to six terms.

Soka University
Description:

The Master’s Program in International Language Education (TESOL) at Soka University is a two-year full time program. Students can choose a practical or research focus for their program. Located in Hachioji, Japan, the program attracts participants from around the world.

St. Francis Xavier University
Description:

The Master of Adult Education at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia is a self directed, distance learning program, with a 3 week residential requirement, where students are allowed to design, implement, and evaluate their own content curriculum. Students choose learning projects and goals on the basis of their own experiences and interests in consultation with their advisor. Students have a 5 year candidacy period within which to complete all program requirements. Suitable for those who have had ESL training in a community college.

St. Mary's University
Description:

The Master of Education (TESL) at St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia includes such courses as Curriculum and Instruction in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language; Pedagogical Grammar for ESL Teachers: Theory and Practice; Seminar and Practicum in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language; Language, Culture, and Education.

Texas A & M University
Description:

The MA in Applied Linguistics program at Texas A & M University in Commerce, Texas may be completed online or face-to-face.  Students can choose between a 30-hour program with a thesis, or a 36-hour program with additional coursework. Although the 36-hour program can be done fully online, it is not suggested for the thesis route.

The New School
Description:

The M.A. in TESOL at the New School in New York is a 30-credit graduate program that connects theory to hands-on practice in either teaching or curriculum development. Students have access to international faculty that includes renowned authors and ESOL professionals such as Jeremy Harmer and Scott Thornbury. The program can be completed online or through an intensive summer teaching residency in New York. The program can be completed full time or part time.

Trinity Western University
Description:

Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia offers a Master of Arts in TESOL.  Using up-to-date methodologies, students research ideas, critically evaluate theories and methods and collaborate on interactive research projects. During the final semester, students must complete a 14-week internship that takes place in Canada or internationally. Trinity Western University is considered a Christian university with a “vision for developing people of high competence and exemplary character who distinguish themselves as leaders in the marketplaces of life.”

University of Alberta
Description:

The Teaching English as a Second Language Masters Program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB is intended to provide ESL instructors with the appropriate theoretical background and practical experience to teach English in Canada and overseas.

University of Birmingham
Description:

The University of Birmingham in Birmingham, United Kingdom offers three Masters degree options. Students may choose between an MA in Applied Linguistics, an MA in TESOL, or an MA in TEFL. Core subjects include second language acquisition; language curriculum design; information technology for language teaching, and discourse analysis.

University of Calgary
Description:

The Master of Arts at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta offers specializations in Adult Learning; Curriculum and Learning; Language and Literacy; Leadership; and Learning Sciences.
